The Double Standard at Catholic Colleges

By now, you have read about what happened at Fisher-More College in which Bishop Olson took away the Extraordinary Form of the Mass or Traditional Latin Mass. There have been many developments from both sides. Here are some of the details:

  • Some have suggested that the priests who celebrated the Mass were illicit. Fisher-More claims they are from the FSSP. However, other reports have commented that the two priests from the FSSP had left.
  • There seems to be some shady dealings in regards to the President of the school.
  • The school has hosted some controversial speakers on the other side of the spectrum and the President has refused to disassociate himself from said views.
  • Some are suggesting that the President leaked this story in order to politicize the TLM.

To me though, taking away the TLM in order to punish the President is the dumbest punishment that a Bishop can do. Let me explain.

The Mass is the Mass, it is Holy. Taking away the Mass and saying that “it is a danger to your soul” is the lamest excuse I have ever heard. If the Mass is Holy, then how can it be a danger to someone’s soul? If the TLM and the NOM are equal, then how is getting rid of one and replacing it with the other going to fix the problem?

It doesn’t. It shows that those who are against the TLM are more than eager to say and act and profess a feign interest that it is equal, but all in all will try to get rid of it the second people start asking questions. Meanwhile, the students get punished when the issue is between Bishop Olson and this President.

If the priest celebrating the TLM was invalid, then Bishop Olson should either celebrate the TLM himself, or find a priest who is going to celebrate it. If there are shady dealings going on within the school, the Board of Trustees can handle it, after all, this is a private institution. Many other schools host some controversial speakers who blast the Church on all sorts of moral issues, you know, kind of like Notre Dame hosting President Obama, and honoring him. How this is different, is because its traditional, and those who hold to the Truth always get thrown to the lions. And finally, if the President is using the TLM as a weapon, then take the weapon away from him, and only him. Don’t ban gun usage because one idiot is dumb enough to not use it properly. Don’t hold Jesus hostage in the Blessed Sacrament as leverage either.

Meanwhile, I read from Cardinal Newman Society that over at Boston College (you know, another fine traditional Catholic University, oh wait never mind) that they are having, get this “Sex Positive Week” which included Erotic Dancing Instruction after the Ash Wednesday Mass. At Boston College, they only celebrate the NOM. I’m fairly positive that if we wait, the Archbishop of Boston will force them to stop saying the NOM because it is “a danger to their souls” and will have to only say the TLM.

Eh, probably not.

But there in lies the problem. If you are an enemy of the Truth and an enemy of tradition, you get a free pass, to do whatever you want. In fact, you might even get encouraged and praised from prelates and priests in saying that you are thinking outside of the box. Meanwhile, those who fight tirelessly to regain the traditions of our faith, that have been ransacked and pillaged by those same enemies, will be persecuted again and again, in the name of being “pastoral”. They will be censored, tossed into the corner and declared crazy.

If the Traditional Latin Mass is the same as the Novus Ordo Mass, then taking away the TLM will not fix the problem as the NOM will just continue the issue. What Bishop Olson is really saying is that he does not agree with the TLM, there are already a couple in his diocese, and that is plenty for his liking. Bishop Olson either doesn’t believe in the true presence in the Eucharist at the TLM, or is an active enemy against it.

Let’s see if I’m wrong and let’s see if Bishop Olson will be just as “pastoral” for liberal groups who are openly dissident against the Church. I won’t be holding my breath.

New Abortion Ad

I saw this ad regarding abortion and thought that I’d share.

Those that are for abortion use all of these lines in order to promote it, yet these hardships can foster bigger growth and bigger achievements. Yes, President Obama is not on our side, but the point is still there. Greatness can come out of the greatest misfortunes that can fall on us.

Predictions Already Coming True?

In my last two posts, I mentioned two things regarding the 2012 Election Results on what we can expect of ourselves, and what we might expect of the Church.

In short, what we can expect of ourselves is that we Catholics must Learn our Faith, we must Live our Faith, and we need to Love our Faith. I’m so excited about this that I would really like to give a talk on this. Perhaps I can podcast something? I am unfamiliar how podcasting works, so if any of you have suggestions, leave a comment. Needless to say, I notice that I am not the only one who has said this, in fact, here is an example:

And

Not the exact words, but a similar message. I do believe the Holy Spirit is working on this throughout the Church. Watch for similar messages.

Secondly, I mentioned that public ex-communications may happen soon. I picked these two articles up from Father Z’s blog.

It appears that in the Diocese of Green Bay, WI, an atheist group is demanding the IRS review the Church’s Tax-Exempt status. This was reported as of November 10, not even a week after the election.

Also, across the Pond in the UK, it appears that legislation is being proposed to remove the Church’s charitable status if they deny anyone Communion or any Sacraments. I would expect similar legislation to start popping up over here as well.

To those groups that want to use the “Separation of Church and State” clause against the Church, I would like to reiterate what Thomas Jefferson said:

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between church and State.

As you can see, no where does he mention that the Church can’t have an opinion regarding the way a government governs. Also, this is not a law, but an opinion of a President, similarly to that of say an opinion of President Obama regarding, say, abortion:

I’ve got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. -President Barack Obama 2008

That is an opinion (and talk about an eye opener even back when he said it, is it really no surprise he’s the most pro-abortion President/politician EVER?) yet it is not a law that all babies are a punishment.

The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. I’m really uncertain how the Church proclaiming the Gospel of Christ is a “clear violation of the separation of Church and State” when the First Amendment of the Constitution protects all of that.

This will pop up throughout the country. Pray that our Bishops and priests be strong enough to stand up for Truth and justice.

What Happens Next For the Church?

I have an interesting prediction for what the Church will begin to do next, now that President Obama, who is the “First Gay President”, has been re-elected.

President Obama looks FABULOUS!!!
with his accented rainbow halo.
As most of you know, or maybe you don’t, the HHS Mandate more or less is attacking Catholic run organizations and forcing them to pay for contraception through insurance, as well as a number of other items that go against core Catholic doctrine and teaching. The conscience clause is no longer allowed, something unheard of within the United States.

It seems to me that the coming persecution of the Catholic Church within the United States has officially begun to get worse. I’m afraid that what we are currently seeing is only the beginning of far worse things to come.
With this being said, I sincerely think that Pro-Abortion, Pro-Homosexual “Marriage”, Pro-Everything Contrary To Church Teaching “catholic” politicians, will begin to be ex-communicated.
Father Z made this.
The reason I feel this is simple:
1. The Church hasn’t public ex-communicated anyone from the Church because currently in the United States, the Church is tax-exempt (as long as they stay out of party politics). I feel that we haven’t seen ex-communications because the Church in America is afraid to be seen “playing party politics” when these ex-communications come down (since most of the ex-communicants will be Democrats).
2. The Church, with the HHS Mandate and I’m certain a barrage of further anti-Catholic laws will be laid out, making it difficult for the Church to stay true to her teachings, while following the civic duty of the law of the land, without violating her conscience.
(For those of you who think that the Church should violate her conscience because contraception, abortion and the like are “a-okay”, I have news for you. 1/3 of hospitals in this country are Catholic. You think the lines are terrible right now? Wait until 1/3 of the hospitals disappear overnight. Good job. Many other Catholic organizations that cover social-justice issues like feeding the poor will also be shut down, leaving the good old efficient government in charge of that. Fun.)
3. If the Church is going to continually be attacked, and possibly lose its tax-exempt status anyways…why not? Why not go out on a high note?
I honestly don’t know anything, this is all a prediction. I could be 100% wrong. It seems like a decent possibility though, based on what has happened, the fact that Catholic run organizations all across the country have been suing the Federal Government (thank you main stream media for covering this (including you Fox! (end sarcasm))) on a massive scale demonstrates the kick-back that Catholics are pushing.
Pope Benedict mentioned earlier this year that the Church may need to become smaller, in order to become better. Pruning the bad branches of the tree will do this, especially when these bad branches produce horrible fruit.

President Obama is Re-Elected

To all of you who voted for Governor Mitt Romney, you now know that President Obama has been re-elected.

This is quite a devastating blow to most, especially since we were expecting skewed polls and a Romney win, either slightly or not so slightly. Any hope of repealing Obamacare is now gone.

The good news though, is that not much has changed…the House still lays in Republican control, and the Senate still stays in Democratic control. How people think the country is not doing so well, yet absolutely NO change in power ANYWHERE, baffles me.

I think there is better news though. Jesus Christ is still king and ruler of Heaven. God in the Holy Trinity is still in control. The Holy Spirit has not left us, and we can still look to Our Father’s mercy and justice.

Not all is lost.

That being said, we each have been given a new job by President Obama’s re-election. We have also been given this job by Pope Benedict for the Year of Faith. This job is for us to get to learn our Catholic faith, and to really start living our Catholic identity.

To be a Catholic, you have to live out your faith. This is our universal call. We are also universally called to become a Saint, although, we all know that we are far from that path. But, many sinful men and women have heard the call, and answered it.

Learn about your faith, and when you are approached regarding your Catholic faith, defend it. This is your job, as well as mine.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I TRUST IN YOU!

Keep up the good fight! For religious liberty, for Truth and for an end to all societal evils that are now deemed “norms”. And most importantly, for Christ and His Church!
