I don’t plan on discussing too much in politics with in this blog at the time being, however, I have found that with the latest power grab by the Obama Administration upon the Catholic Church, as well as the potential loss of both personal and religious freedom, it is difficult to separate the two on this particular issue.
As I’m sure you know by now (and if you haven’t heard you have been hiding under a rock), the Obama Admin. has been forcing a very pro-abortion, pro-contraception and pro-sterilization mandate upon the Catholic Church. It has bent over backwards for the protection of conscience for specific religious groups (Amish, Muslims, Mormons), but, when it comes to the largest religious group within the United States, nuh uh, too bad, you must violate your consciences, no exceptions for you!
A lot of the arguments for the mandate and why Catholics should violate their consciences have been incredibly weak and hollow minded. The common one is “well 98% of Catholic women use contraception, so what’s the big deal?” Well, just because the majority of Catholics commit mortal sin on a frequent basis, doesn’t nullify the intensity and gravity of the sin.
One thing that surprises me most is the fact that we keep hearing the argument “Separation of Church and State!”. I’m amazed how many people wrongly interpret this. There is no such statement within the entire Constitution or Bill of Rights. What we do know for absolute surety is from the First Amendment of our Constitution.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Right there in bold is all you need to know. The HHS Mandate is a clear attack on the First Amendment. It is prohibiting the free exercise of the Roman Catholic Church, and all individuals who feel that it would violate their conscience to allow for this.
I personally hope that Obamacare gets repealed. There are so many bad pieces of law within the entirety of it, that the Supreme Court could get back logged looking at each and every questionable piece. It would take many years to go through it all, listen to arguments, and make decisions on it. It would be easier to rewrite it. There are many other issues with it that make it questionable. Many of them have been addressed already by others, so I will not dig too deep into it.
